I am re-writing my review after having used this and other language apps for a while now. Speakly is simply the best app to supplement your language learning from beginner to intermediate. Cloze completion with spaced recall for the most frequent vocabulary + listening/reading input practice + some guided speaking practice! I mean, whatever course you are taking, or graded readers you are reading, this app will help you learn and retain what you learned!

Definitely better than Duolingo. Starts from words that are actually useful in conversations. I also like that I can customize it more – I learn languages best by memorizing a lot of vocabulary, and Speakly offers that as an option.

Baits you with premium features, then takes it all away the next day. Scummy. Can't even do a basic review before they ask for $70.

Meh. Heavily paywalled, constantly harassing you by presenting a feature, you try to interact with the feature, and it pops up like 'haha nice try, give us money now'. The notifications are hit or miss if they appear, and when they do the text can be... let's go with 'unnecessary' as 'demeaning' feels too strong (just show me a basic notification, mmk?). While the app appears to be presenting an 'adequate' curriculum tuned for each user, it lacks any retention imo and falls flat.

Even though everything else is pretty nice, definitely better than Duolingo, the voice recognition is exceptionally terrible for this app. I've asked native speakers to do the speaking exercises and the app still says that the words are pronounced wrong. If it wasn't for the fact that Estonian language doesn't have a lot of options, I would have dropped this app, as it's extremely frustrating to hear that "hi" was not said correctly every single time for 16 euros a month.
