I understand that certain tasks require access to other things on the
phone, but why must the denial of a feature make the whole app unusable? If
I'm not interested in location based items, why can't I deny that
permission but still be able to use the app?

Most Horrendous Terms of Service I've read in a long time. It won't let you open without allowing access to SMS and phone calls. Forces you to open an account. A truly great app wouldn't make you to give up all your privacy and then force an arbitration clause.
