umwelt is a small noticing app for Android. when you've been scrolling on a social app for a while, umwelt sends a single quiet question. one question. an answer if you feel like it. nothing else. it never makes a sound. it never vibrates. the word (German, oom-velt) — biologist Jakob von Uexkuell's 1909 term for the slice of reality an organism actually perceives, the world its senses reach. a bat's umwelt is a map made of echoes. yours is shaped by sight and scent, sound and texture. this app is an attempt to refresh that slice. how it works umwelt watches the time you spend in scroll apps — across apps, not just one. brief interruptions don't reset it; longer breaks gradually do. the more you've scrolled today, the more readily it sends a question. you can answer or ignore it. a user who opens the app once a month is using it correctly. questions are about what you can see, hear, smell, or touch — not how you feel. more than 450 prompts in total. you can write an answer if you feel like it; the words stay on your phone. the research it's informed by umwelt sits alongside four bodies of work in the literature on attention and noticing: — attention restoration theory (Kaplan & Kaplan, 1989) on directed-attention fatigue and soft fascination. — savoring research (Bryant & Veroff, 2007) on attending to positive experience. — Three Good Things (Seligman et al., 2005), the closest established intervention to compare against. — attention residue (Leroy, 2009) on the cognitive carryover that lingers when you shift between tasks. these inform umwelt. they do not validate it. no study has tested exactly this design — interrupt-triggered, environmental, no affective labeling — at scale. umwelt+ a one-time unlock that adds the rest of the app: questions filtered by time and place, an answer archive (an anthology grouped by question rather than a journal), photo attachments on answers, and home / work designations to power the location-aware filtering. one price, no subscription, no recurring charges. find it in settings. privacy everything you write or capture stays on your phone — no account, no cloud, no analytics, no advertising, no third-party SDKs that phone home. the single connection out is google play, which handles the optional umwelt+ purchase on its own; we receive only a purchase token, never your card or contact details. permissions — usage data access: required to know when you're using a scroll app. umwelt sees only which app is on screen and for how long; never what's inside those apps. — notifications (Android 13+): required to send the prompt. silent by default. — location (optional): only used if you set a "home" or "work" place in Settings, to make questions context-aware. background location is never requested. made by Back Room Strategies in Colorado.
Recent changes: A much bigger question corpus — 455 questions across 23 different contexts, including season, time of day, and weather. Smarter selection means you won't see the same one twice in a row. Reliability fix: triggers now fire reliably even after your phone has been idle or after the app has been closed for a while.
