Description

Varaždinska županija jedna je od najstarijih hrvatskih županija, a spominje se već 1181. godine u povelji hrvatsko-ugarskog kralja Bele III. U povijesti Varaždinske županije posebice se ističe Toma II. Erdődy koji je bio prvi nasljedni veliki župan Varaždinske županije. Njemu je ta čast pripala jer se iskazao u borbi protiv Osmanlija, pa mu je kralj, uz čast nasljedstva funkcije velikog župana, 1607. godine darovao i varaždinsku tvrđavu, današnji Stari grad. Potomci Tome II. Erdődyja živjeli su u Starom gradu sve do 1925. godine kada Stari grad postaje muzej.

Zlatno doba Varaždinske županije druga je polovica 18. stoljeća kada je Varaždinska županija središte događanja i državne vlasti, a Hrvatski sabor zasjeda na području županije čak 30 puta. U to doba nastaju i brojni dvorci, kurije, kapelice, crkve, palače, pa i Županijska palača koja je i sada sjedište župana. Županijska palača nastaje u doba kraljice Marije Terezije, prije više od 250 godina, a u to doba nastaju i službeni grb i barjak koji preuzimaju grb obitelji Erdődy. Varaždinska županija danas jedna je od manjih, ali najgušće naseljenih hrvatskih županija, a čine ju 22 općine i 6 gradova. U podrumu Županijske palače nalazi se Centar za posjetitelje Varaždinske županije. Dobro došli u Varaždinsku županiju.
