WASH MITRA is an app-based platform for one stop solution to address the operation and
maintenance every demand cum services crises in ZP Schools and other institutions through
Young WASH Entrepreneurs.
It was observed that most of the WASH facilities in schools are not up to date and
sustainable due to absence of operation and maintenance facilities, and also lack of skilled
professionals, technology deficit, and limited human resources to manage these facilities. In
addition, teachers and students from remote areas faces greater challenges regarding the
basic maintenance of WASH facilities. Some of the key issues contributing to the poor
Operation & Maintenance (O&M) have been identified, such as lack of finance, equipment,
material, and inadequate data on Operation & Maintenance; inappropriate system design;
and inadequate workmanship; overlapping responsibilities; inadequate skilled professionals,
inadequate training; lack of interest towards maintenance; inadequate emphasis on
maintenance, etc.
In support of UNICEF, the CYDA has been implementing a project ‘One-stop Solution to
address the operation and maintenance demand cum services crises in Government Schools
through Young WASH Entrepreneurs (YWEs) as Service Providers in 14 districts (Nandurbar,
Nashik, Aurangabad, Pune, Sangali, Satara, Kolhapur, Osmanabad, Gadchiroli, Parbhani,
Washim, Buldhana, Latur and Hingoli) of Maharashtra’.
