This guide sorts insects by where you meet them. You do not need a net and a long trip; page one starts at the kitchen window or under a pot on the balcony.
238 ENTRIES, SORTED BY WHERE YOU MEET THEM
Indoors and just outside the door: 18
Garden and flower bed: 83
Parks and open fields: 56
Camping, hills and rivers: 81
Each entry was written from scratch with size, season, where you meet it, what to look at, how it lives and one small fact, with its sources named. You can read it as a book without opening the camera once.
204 CAN BE FOUND FROM A PHOTO
The busier a group is, the more the recognition was split into its own specialist: Japanese beetles, rhinoceros and stag beetles of the world, Japanese butterflies, butterflies of the world, Japanese dragonflies, dragonflies of the world, ladybirds, leaf beetles, mantises, moths, stink bugs, and the everyday bugs around a house.
At most three candidates, never a single verdict. When confidence is short, no candidate is offered at all. The same photo returns the same answer however many days pass.
WHEN IT MIGHT STING OR CAUSE A RASH
If such an insect enters the candidate list, the ordinary result view is replaced by a caution card.
What it tells you stops at two lines: do not handle it with bare hands, and if you are stung or develop a rash, consult a medical professional rather than this result. It does not describe symptoms, give first-aid steps or suggest medicines, and it does not rate how venomous anything is.
WHAT THIS GUIDE DOES NOT KNOW
Photograph something outside the 204 and it will not be nudged toward the closest match. It says it could not tell, and offers the manual search instead.
The book also includes creatures that are not insects but turn up as bugs anyway, such as spiders and woodlice. They are labelled honestly as what they are.
