Switzerland does not have one naturalisation test. It has twenty-six.
Aargau sets a published multiple-choice test. Bern examines in writing. Lucerne assesses you in a personal interview. The fee, the pass mark, the language of the exam and the retake rules all change at the cantonal border. Most apps teach one generic test.
Bürgertest asks which canton you are naturalising in, and then prepares you for that canton: its exam, its interview, its language requirement and its procedure.
THE EXAM
- 256 questions on the federal core: democracy and federalism, history, geography, the rule of law, social security and civil society
- A question pack for each of the 26 cantons, written from that canton's own sources: 30 questions, 45 for Zurich
- 25 lessons on the federal material plus two for your canton, each one read aloud in your exam's language on request, and each ending with the questions it covers
- Practice with an explanation and a source for every answer, right or wrong
- Timed mock exams in your canton's published format, and a clearly labelled practice format where your canton publishes none
You study your canton's pool - 286 questions, or 301 in Zurich - not a national average.
THE INTERVIEW
In many communes the decision is made in a conversation. You may be asked who sits on your municipal council, which communes border yours, or where you read what is decided locally. Bürgertest gives you 49 questions you may be asked, eight more of their own in sixteen cantons, what a strong answer covers, and a place to keep your own answers. Facts about your municipality come from the official register.
Rehearse out loud: the examiner asks five questions you did not choose, in your canton's language and at the speed you need, and you hear your answers back.
THE LANGUAGE CERTIFICATE
Naturalisation asks for spoken B1 and written A2. Practise in the style of the fide test: 12 everyday scenarios with listening, reading, speaking and writing, plus ten questions about yourself to answer out loud. Original material, not the official test.
THE PROCEDURE
A free step-by-step guide takes you from checking that you qualify to receiving citizenship, with your canton's own figures, a document checklist and a record of the steps you have done.
STUDY IN YOUR LANGUAGE, SIT THE EXAM IN THEIRS
The app is available in English, German, French, Italian, Portuguese, Spanish and Thai. You are examined in German, French or Italian depending on your canton, so the app tells you which applies to you and teaches the terms in that language.
WRITTEN FROM PRIMARY SOURCES
Every question names its source: the Federal Constitution, admin.ch, the Federal Statistical Office, cantonal authorities. Where a canton has not published a rule, the app says so instead of inventing one.
