Understanding early learning concepts—such as size, shape, quantity, position, and sequence—is an essential building block for language development. These concepts are closely tied to a child's ability to follow directions, participate in the classroom, and develop foundational reading and math skills.

The Basic Concepts Skills Screener (BCSS) is a dynamic, individually administered qualitative tool designed specifically for Speech-Language Pathologists, educators, and parents to easily screen, describe, and monitor a child’s conceptual understanding. Authored by experienced SLPs Darlene Nething, MS, CCC-SLP and Mary Huston, MS, CCC-SLP, and developed by Smarty Ears, BCSS provides actionable, descriptive data to guide your therapy and interventions.

COMPREHENSIVE CONCEPT EVALUATION
Assess a child's knowledge across four critical categories:
• Spatial Concepts: Words relating to position and space (e.g., next to, under, behind).
• Quantitative Concepts: Understanding quantity and measurement (e.g., equal, few, more).
• Comparative Concepts: Comprehending comparative and superlative adjectives (e.g., big, bigger, same, different).
• Temporal Concepts: Recognizing concepts of time and sequence (e.g., first, last, before).
