That matters more than it sounds. Most binaural apps ship audio files, and a recording either contains the frequency it claims or it doesn't — you have no way to check. Nothing is being played back here. The two tones are computed sample by sample as you listen, so the beat frequency is exact by construction. When the app says 6.0 Hz, it is 6.0 Hz.

It also means a journey can move. A recording is fixed at whatever it was rendered at; a generated tone can glide from 18 Hz down to 6 Hz across twenty minutes without a single edit point.

HOW BINAURAL BEATS WORK
Play 200 Hz in one ear and 206 Hz in the other and you don't hear two tones. You hear a 6 Hz pulse that exists nowhere in the audio — your brain produces it from the difference. That 6 Hz is the beat frequency, and it's the number that matters. The carrier underneath is just the vehicle.

Because the effect comes from the difference between your ears, headphones are essential. On a speaker the channels mix in the air and the beat disappears entirely.

THE FIVE BANDS
Beat frequencies are named after the EEG bands they correspond to:
• Delta — 0.5 to 4 Hz — deep sleep
• Theta — 4 to 8 Hz — meditation, the hypnagogic threshold
• Alpha — 8 to 13 Hz — relaxed, awake
• Beta — 13 to 30 Hz — alert, focused
• Gamma — 30 to 40 Hz — peak concentration

THETA, AND WHY JOURNEYS MATTER
Theta is the band most consciousness-exploration practice is built around — the narrow border between waking and sleep where the body settles but attention stays. The premise practitioners work from is that sustained exposure to a theta-range beat helps the mind find and hold that state.

The difficulty is staying there. Drop into theta and hold it long enough and you usually fall asleep.

That's why this app is built around journeys. A journey is a curve: start in alpha where it's easy to settle, glide down into theta over fifteen or twenty minutes, hold — then rise briefly back toward alpha before descending again. Those pulls are deliberate. They keep you on the near side of sleep. Mind awake, body asleep.
