How does a phone turn taps into pictures? How does a photo cross the world in under a second? How does a chatbot write, and how do you spot a scam? Blip answers by letting you build it yourself.

Meet Blip, a tiny bit who is either off (0) or on (1). Every chapter starts with a short animated lesson, so you never need to know anything first. Then you play.

• Computers: flip switches to count in binary, store letters as numbers, then program Blip step by step with loops.
• Smartphones: mix red, green and blue light into any colour, teach the phone's sensors to spot running, and plan routes on a tight battery.
