CWI Welding Exam Study Guide

Pass the CWI by knowing what the exam actually tests — how each welding process behaves and fails, what every welding symbol commands, which discontinuity is forming and whether the code accepts it, which NDE method finds what, why preheat and hydrogen control exist, and how to navigate a codebook fast enough to answer an open-book question in two minutes — instead of rereading a shelf of welding textbooks.

CWI Welding Exam Study Guide is a focused, fully offline companion for the American Welding Society's Certified Welding Inspector examination, organized around all three parts of the exam — Part A Fundamentals, Part B Practical, and Part C Codebook — with the Part A subject areas weighted the way the exam weights them.

SIX WAYS TO STUDY
• Flashcards — tap to reveal, tagged by exam section
• Multiple-choice questions in real inspection scenarios — a fillet gauge on a concave weld, a cluster of porosity against the acceptance table, an electrode oven log that doesn't add up — each with a worked explanation
• True/false drills built from the misconceptions that cost marks
• Term-matching game — pair AWS terminology in rounds of five
• Searchable glossary from arc blow to yield strength, including the process, discontinuity, NDE, and document vocabulary the exam assumes
• Formulas & key values reference — effective throat, heat input, carbon equivalent, the fraction-decimal table, electrode classification decoders, gauge-selection rules and the exam's anchor numbers — each with its variables and its trap

ALL THREE PARTS COVERED
• Part A Fundamentals — welding processes and cutting, welding symbols, metallurgy and heat control, weld discontinuities, NDE and destructive testing, WPS/PQR and qualification, inspector duties, safety, and fabrication math
• Part B Practical — the tool kit (fillet gauges, bridge cam, V-WAC), measuring replica specimens, and applying a Book of Specifications exactly as written
• Part C Codebook — how structural codes are organized, prequalification and qualification logic, statically vs cyclically loaded acceptance criteria, and the timed-lookup strategy that passes open-book exams

BUILT LIKE THE EXAM
The CWI exam has three parts, each requiring a minimum score of 72%: Part A is a closed-book computer-based fundamentals exam, Part B is a hands-on practical using replica weld specimens and inspection tools, and Part C is an open-book codebook exam on the code you select at registration — most candidates choose AWS D1.1, with API 1104, D1.5, D17.1, ASME and other options available. Part B is taken first. This app drills the knowledge behind all three.
