Description
DeCiphr is an AI-assisted visual analysis platform built for Linguistic Landscapes researchers, and researchers across other linguistic fields and beyond. Whether you study linguistic landscapes, public signage, or any other form of visual culture — DeCiphr gives you the tools to decode what you see, systematically and rigorously.
CUSTOM CODING FRAMEWORKS Define your own coding scheme using any established or original framework. Add your codes, write definitions, and set a master analysis prompt. DeCiphr's AI applies your framework precisely to each image — with the option to restrict the model to your codes only (Strict Coding Mode), so no general AI assumptions contaminate your analysis.
GEOSEMIOTIC ANALYSIS For researchers in linguistic landscape studies, DeCiphr includes a full built-in framework based on Scollon & Wong Scollon (2003), in a two-layer model: AI structural coding plus your own interpretive and reflexive coding.
FIELD COLLECTION Photograph and analyze physical signs in the field with automatic GPS tagging and an interactive map view.
SYNC ACROSS DEVICES (OPTIONAL) Work fully offline with all data stored locally on your device — or create a free optional account to sync your projects, frameworks, and coded data between the DeCiphr mobile and web apps. Your photographs always stay on your device and are never uploaded.
KEY FEATURES - Custom researcher-defined coding frameworks with strict or open coding mode - AI analysis powered by Claude Vision (Anthropic) — accurate, fast, multimodal - GPS-tagged field collection with interactive map view - Two-layer Geosemiotics framework: AI coding + researcher interpretation - Framework sharing via .sigframe files — share your coding scheme with colleagues - Analytic memos and editable AI output per sign - Full-screen image zoom for detailed visual inspection - CSV export compatible with NVivo, Atlas.ti, and MAXQDA - Optional free account to sync between mobile and web - 50 free analyses included — add your own Anthropic API key for unlimited use
PRIVACY & DATA By default, DeCiphr stores all your data locally on your device and the developer cannot access it. Creating an account is optional; if you do, your projects, frameworks, and coded data sync to your private DeCiphr account so the mobile and web apps share them — your photographs always remain on your device. When you run an analysis, your image is sent to Anthropic's Claude Vision API only for that request and is not retained. Your API key, if provided, is stored only on your device. FOR RESEARCHERS DeCiphr is designed to complement, not replace, rigorous qualitative research. AI analysis is a starting point — all outputs are editable, and the researcher retains full interpretive control. Built by a researcher, for researchers.
