Keyboard
Next to the full typing keys are a mic key and a key that hides the keyboard. A two-finger swipe up starts dictating and a swipe down finishes.
iOS lets only the app turn on the microphone, so when the mic is off the first tap opens Free Flow. Tap your app's name at the top left to go back. The mic then stays ready for 5 minutes, 15 minutes or an hour, and the mic key works without leaving your app.
Autocorrect fixes a mistyped English word when you tap space, return or a punctuation key. Tap delete right after to put your word back.
Six key layouts: Classic (Apple's keyboard, key for key, the default), Current with a big L-shaped return, and L1 to L4. The dictate key goes on the left or the right. Hold the #+= key to open the keyboard list, with Emoji one tap away.
Cleanup with Apple Intelligence
With the switch on, Apple Intelligence, Apple's on-device model, writes each dictation in the style you pick: Formal, Casual, very casual or Excited. Where it can't run, your words go in as heard and Free Flow says why. Turn it off in Settings.
Other ways to start
Control Center, the Lock Screen, Siri and the Shortcuts app start and stop Free Flow. On iPhone, so do Back Tap and the Action Button. With the Free Flow keyboard on screen the text goes in at your cursor; otherwise it is copied, ready to paste. While the mic is on, a Live Activity shows the time left and a Stop button.
Speech models
Free Flow recommends a speech model for your device and shows each download's size first. It checks every downloaded file against a SHA-256 pinned in the app.
With enough memory it picks Parakeet Ultra by Moondream, a post-training of NVIDIA's Parakeet TDT 0.6B v3 that covers 25 European languages. Parakeet Redux, also by Moondream, covers the same languages and is the smallest download, at 220 MB. Phonon-2 by Fermion Research is for English. So is Underdog Bark 3.0 by Conway Research, in two forms: Clean leaves out "um" and false starts, and Pro writes every word. A C++ version of Parakeet TDT 0.6B v3 comes in three sizes.
The first time you use a Core ML model, Free Flow prepares it once for your device's Neural Engine. If that takes more than 10 minutes, Free Flow says so and offers Try again.
Your words
Dictionary: add names and unusual words, spelled your way. Phonon-2 and Bark 3.0 Clean lean toward them as they listen, and their cards in Models say Dictionary.
History keeps your last 500 dictations on this device. Delete entries any time, or turn history off.
If a call or closing the app cuts a dictation short, the audio stays on this device so you can transcribe it again. Unfinished recordings are deleted after 7 days unless you pick another time.
Privacy
100% private: nothing you say leaves your device. Speech recognition and cleanup run on your iPhone or iPad. Your audio and your text are not uploaded.
No sign-in, analytics, ads or crash reporting.
Free Flow goes online only to download speech model files from Hugging Face.
Allow Full Access: iOS does not let keyboards use the microphone, so the Free Flow app listens and passes the text to the keyboard through storage on your device that only Free Flow can open. The keyboard has no network code. Without Full Access the keys still type.
Good to know
Requires iOS 18 or iPadOS 18 or later. Cleanup needs a device and iOS version with Apple Intelligence turned on.
Free Flow's source is available under the PolyForm Noncommercial License 1.0.0: free for personal, school and nonprofit use; it may not be sold.
