Genau: German Flashcards

Genau is German vocabulary for English speakers, built on spaced repetition. It shows you each word at the moment you are about to forget it — and keeps every other word out of your way until its moment comes.

A few German words a day. That is the whole ask.

WHY THE GAPS MATTER

Looking at a word repeatedly works briefly, then it goes. What lasts is recalling a word after a gap long enough that recalling it took effort. Genau finds that gap for every word separately: a word you find easy drifts further out of the way, and a word that keeps catching you comes back sooner — without you ever telling the app which is which.

Two people learning the same list end up with two different schedules. That is the point.

WHAT IT COUNTS

A count of words you know, with no percentage anywhere. A word counts as known once you can go three weeks without it — earned, and impossible to game.

One chart of cards a day: the week behind you, today, and the week ahead. The days behind are the record of showing up. The days ahead are where you watch the method work, as the daily load falls and the words mature.

LEVELS AND PRICE

All four levels — A1, A2, B1 and B2 — are open and free while Genau is in beta. Every word, no card limit, nothing held back.

WHAT IT DOES NOT DO

No streaks to break. No lives, no gems, no leaderboards, no mascot. No ads. It will not let you grind ahead either: recalling a word you can already recall easily teaches you almost nothing, and selling you effort that buys nothing is not what this is for.

It does not listen to you, and it has no microphone.

Genau is what a German says when you finally get it right.
