Glance: Read China Instantly

The delivery screen. The lunch menu. That button you’re about to tap.

Glance helps you read everyday Chinese without the translation detour. Translate photos and screenshots into English on your iPhone or iPad, hear Mandarin pronunciation, and keep useful words for later.

SEE WHAT IT SAYS.
English labels appear over the original image, so the layout stays familiar. Tap the background to compare with the original, double-tap to zoom, or browse a text list. Tap a translated item for its Chinese characters, tone-marked pinyin, meaning and pronunciation.

OPEN. SNAP. UNDERSTAND.
Your camera and recent local photos are together on one screen. Take a photo or tap a thumbnail to translate. Scroll the photo grid, pinch to zoom the camera, and double-tap the Translate tab to return to the top. Camera photos are saved only when you choose.

OFFLINE FROM THE START.
Chinese text recognition, translation and pinyin run on your device with bundled models and dictionaries. No account or language-pack download is needed. Your images are not uploaded to a translation service. Downloading the app requires internet access; translating does not.

SAY WHAT YOU NEED.
See Chinese characters with pinyin underneath. Listen using an installed Mandarin system voice, and explore character stroke order with playback and speed controls. If a voice is missing, Glance explains how to install one in iOS Settings; that system download may need internet access.

LEARN THE WORDS YOU ACTUALLY USE.
Save a useful word or phrase straight from a translation. Study helps you review it over time with spaced repetition, four answer ratings and a preview of when it will return. Practise Chinese to English, English to Chinese, listening, or your own card layouts. Each card format keeps its own schedule.

See new and due cards, review activity and HSK vocabulary progress. Edit your saved items, pause a practice format, or export a backup when you choose. Vocabulary and review history stay on your device; there is no automatic cloud sync.

KEEP GLANCE CLOSE.
Add the camera control to Control Center or your Lock Screen. On supported iPhones, assign it to the Action Button. Quick access provides guides for the one-time iOS setup.

To read another app’s screen, create a shortcut with Take Screenshot followed by Glance’s Translate Screenshot action. Results open in Glance; return to the original app to interact with it. Protected screens may prevent capture.

FREE, UNLIMITED TRANSLATION.
No credits, purchase or subscription is required.

Glance currently translates Simplified Chinese into English. Translation, pinyin and speech can contain errors; check the original when details matter. HSK progress describes your saved or encountered vocabulary and review activity, not an official proficiency assessment.

Made for the little moments of everyday life in China.
