THE VISUAL METHOD
Long-press any character on the rice-paper canvas: the kaiti glyph cross-fades into a small narrative scene that reads as both an image and the same set of strokes.
For pictograms (象形字), the picture is a literal rendering — 山 is mountains, 木 is a tree.
For ideograms (会意字), the components interact — 休 (rest) shows a person leaning against a tree, with the 人 and 木 still visible as ink lines.
For phonetic-semantic compounds (形声字, the most common type), the detail page breaks down which component carries the meaning and which carries the sound — the structure that unlocks the next 80% of characters once you see it.
FROM CHARACTER TO SENTENCE
Learning a character doesn't end at the illustration. Each one opens into the everyday words it lives in, with a short sentence for each — so the character stops being an isolated shape and becomes something you can read.
Review then asks you to recall before anything is revealed: the meaning, the pronunciation, and key words inside real sentences, each on its own schedule. Miss one and you get the reading, the artwork, the memory hook, and a side-by-side comparison when a lookalike is what tripped you.
WHY INKSEAL
• Recognition-focused, not writing drills. Built for learners who want to read Chinese without spending hours tracing strokes.
• A library that keeps growing. New characters, words, and refinements ship as content updates — your library stays current without waiting for app releases.
• Native iOS app, designed for touch gestures and the iPhone screen — not a web app squeezed into a browser.
• No account, no tracking, no ads. We never see your name or email. We don't share data with advertisers.
WHAT YOU GET
• 1,799 Chinese characters across HSK 1–6
• One purpose-designed illustration per character, with the strokes baked into the artwork
• A Common-use set on every character — up to five everyday words, each with a short example sentence and its full pinyin, plus more than 10,000 related words and expressions to explore
• Word pages with pinyin, meanings, character breakdowns, and your learning progress
• Etymology references showing oracle bone and seal script forms where available
• Lookalike comparisons for 937 curated character pairs
• Recall-first review of meaning and pronunciation, plus key word meanings asked inside real sentences
• Learner controls: skip what you already know, bring back what you forgot, and choose how often reviews return
