InnerVoice: AAC for Autism

InnerVoice is an AAC app for autistic and nonspeaking communicators of every age, built by speech-language pathologists so the board they already know becomes a voice — and a patient partner to practice with.

START FROM THE BOARD THEY ALREADY HAVE
Photograph the paper or printed board they use today. It becomes a talking board in seconds: same layout, same colors, same button positions, so what they have already learned still works. Your boards are stored on your device.

A PARTNER WHO WAITS
Well-meaning partners guess. They finish the sentence, hand over the cup, and the device stays in the bag because it was never needed to get the point across. InnerVoice's avatar asks a real question and then waits, without guessing what comes next. That patience turns a board into a conversation. It speaks within the words on their board, models grammar without correcting out loud, expands what they say by one small step, and honors every "no" right away.

WORDS FOR THE MOMENT THEY'RE IN
Point the camera at the snack, the dog, the playground. Scene Talk reads what is actually in the photo and offers words for it, so communication follows them out of the room.

CHANGE THE BOARD BY SAYING SO
Say or type what you want changed — add a button for their teacher, add dinosaur, take a word off — and it's done. No menu tree to learn. If you can describe the change, you can make it.

MORE THAN REQUESTING
"No." "Not that." "I need a break." Refusing, redirecting, commenting, and asking all work. A system built only for requests teaches a child that talking is for getting things.

A FACE THEY DESIGN
Build an avatar from skin tone, hair, eyes, and shirt color. It blinks, its lips sync to every word, and it shows seven distinct feeling faces. The expression system grew out of National Science Foundation research into synthesized emotional communication.

SUPPORT FOR THE PARTNER, TOO
Not sure how to teach refusing, or how to wait without pressuring? Ask the avatar. It answers in plain language with practical AAC partner guidance: model, wait, respond, expand. Switch on Teacher Modeling and goal tracking pauses, so what you model is never counted as the student's own communication.

FOR SLPs AND SCHOOLS
Import the boards your students already know instead of rebuilding them, and run practice on the exact vocabulary their motor plan is built on.

Enter a communication goal in your own words. As the student talks, InnerVoice logs opportunities against that goal and marks what met the criteria and what did not, with the reason why — so you are not tallying trials on a clipboard while you are trying to be present with the student. A visible indicator shows when the student is communicating and when an adult is modeling, and modeling is never counted as the student's own communication.

Every conversation can be exported as a timestamped language sample, labeled by speaker and by input mode. Print it for the file, or send it to EASI (easievaluation.com), our companion analysis tool for language sample analysis, progress reports, and evaluation documentation. You collect during the interaction that was going to happen anyway. SLPs and educators stay in charge of goals, supports, and what the data means.
