Support Phonics, Reading, Spelling and Writing

EdShed’s FREE Letter Tiles Tool is a powerful resource designed to support phonics, spelling, reading, writing and vocabulary. Children can connect graphemes, letters, prefixes and suffixes to see how words are formed. Physically constructing words on screen develops phonemic awareness and morphological knowledge.

Whether children are just learning to read and write or are developing greater spelling fluency and exploring more complex patterns, they can build words at their level from scratch. This multi-sensory tool enables children to listen to the words that they have created being read aloud. Clicking phonics notation shows children how the word can be split into phonemes. Reveal the dictionary definition to understand what the word means and increase vocabulary.

The tool also includes coloured tiles enabling you to represent letters and cover tiles so you can get creative. The drawing tool creates endless possibilities for learning and word fun!

Support Early Reading and Writing

This app supports early reading and writing, as children can use the letter tiles to physically segment and blend words. It can be used in the classroom, alongside writing, as a stand-alone activity or to support home learning. Children are encouraged to think about the letters, graphemes and letter sequences in words.

Support Key Literacy Skills

In later years, it can be used to support key literacy skills. Children can create words and experiment with adding suffixes and prefixes, which helps pupils to spot patterns and increase their morphological understanding. It is effective for addressing common spelling misconceptions and errors. Pupils often know a sound but are unsure which grapheme or letter sequence to choose. By presenting multiple plausible options, the tool encourages reasoning and discussion around spelling choices. This supports the development of orthographic knowledge and reduces reliance on guesswork.
