A strong player looks at a hand and knows which tiles win it, without thinking. That eye comes from practice.
One round is ten quick hands, a few minutes a day.
PungPungHu (碰碰胡) is a Hong Kong mahjong waiting-tile quiz for iPhone and Mac.
How it plays
Thirteen tiles slide in and flip face up. The hand is one tile from winning. A burning fuse starts the clock.
Below the hand sits a short row of tiles that could finish it. Tap every one that would, then press Done.
Name the exact set of winning tiles and the time left pays a bonus, up to double.
A partly right answer earns no bonus.
The more tiles a hand waits on, the more it pays.
Miss one, or tap one that finishes nothing, and the hand scores less.
After every hand, the game shows how each winning tile completes the hand.
A gentle start
Your first Easy hand has no clock, and the next two are plain two-sided waits. The first Advanced hand has no clock either.
Left-handed mode in Settings mirrors the controls.
Four levels
• Easy: the hand comes sorted, with one or two waits. 15 seconds. Free.
• Medium: the hand comes shuffled, with two to four waits. 25 seconds. You may sort it, and that hand scores ×0.7. Free.
• Hard: every hand is a single suit with no honours, with three to six waits. 35 seconds.
• Advanced: Hong Kong rules, with a 3-fan minimum. Hands may show exposed sets.
Some tiles finish the hand but score under 3 fan. They are traps, and calling one costs you.
Some hands have no winning tile at all. Then the right answer is No win. 40 seconds.
Hong Kong rules
PungPungHu uses Hong Kong rules as they are played casually today: the 三三制 fan values, a 3-fan minimum and a 10-fan cap, with no flowers.
In Advanced every hand wins off another player's discard, with East as both seat and round wind. The screen shows this on every hand.
The Rules page in Settings lists every fan and how scoring works.
Leaderboards
There are four Game Center leaderboards, one for each level.
Once unlocked, your score posts at the end of each round, under your Game Center nickname.
Game Center is optional. You can play every level you have without signing in.
Your best rounds for each level are also kept on your device.
One purchase, no subscription
Easy and Medium are free, with no limit on how much you play.
One purchase unlocks Hard, Advanced, posting your scores and the gold tile set.
There is no subscription and there are no ads. The price is shown in the App Store.
Profile, share card and reminder
Choose a nickname and an avatar. They stay on your device.
Share a picture of your round. Your nickname goes on it only if you turn that on.
The optional reminder is local, comes at most twice, 3 and 6 days after you last played or opened the game, and can be turned off in Settings.
On the Mac
The View menu zooms up to 200%, as far as your screen allows.
Esc leaves a round, and M turns the sound on and off.
Languages
Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese with Hong Kong terms, and English.
Your data
No account, no Mu Media server, no analytics and no crash reporting.
Your settings and scores stay on your device. Your nickname leaves it only inside a card you share.
Apple handles the purchase, and the leaderboards are Apple's Game Center.
