The greatest minds and most successful people in history each found their own unique regimen or rituals and daily tasks in order to made sure that they found time each day to do their best work.

Steve Jobs spent his mornings re-evaluating his work and his goals in life. In his speech to a graduating class at Stanford, Jobs said, “For the past 33 years I have looked in the mirror every morning and asked myself: ‘If today were the last day of my life, would I want to do what I am about to do today?’ And whenever the answer has been ‘No’ for too many days in a row, I know I need to change something.”

Marissa Mayer, former Google VP and Yahoo CEO, wakes up as early as possible after a 6-hour sleep, works out, gets ready for work, and is in the office for a conference call about new technologies by 9:00am.

Renowned mathematician Descartes liked to linger in bed every morning visualizing, his mind wandering in sleep through woods, gardens, and enchanted palaces thus clearing his mind and expanding his imagination to assist his work.

Anthony Trollope, one of the most respected writers of the Victorian era, strictly adhered to his rule of writing three thousand words every day before going off to his work at the postal service, writing more than two dozen books over thirty-three years.

Richard Branson, Elon Musk, Tim Ferriss, Mark Zuckerberg, Anthony Robbins… the list of accomplished human beings who have found success through a structured daily routine goes on and on.

For some, it’s a matter of using their time efficiently, condensing the mundane tasks that they must repeat each day in order to free up time to do what they love. For others, it’s a matter of “working smarter” by keeping track of the important tasks and ensuring that they got done each day while avoiding distractions. And for others still, it's maintaining a ritual that requires as little mental effort as possible so that they could use the maximum amount of their mental energy on their creative works.

Creating a set of daily tasks helps to develop a ritual. Developing a daily ritual can, as Mason Currey in his book Daily Rituals writes, "be a finely calibrated mechanism for taking advantage of a range of limited resources: time (the most limited resource of all) as well as willpower, self- discipline, optimism. A solid routine fosters a well- worn groove for one’s mental energies and helps stave off the tyranny of moods."
