Solwind: Aurora Forecast

Solwind tells you whether you can see the northern lights tonight from where you're standing. Your backyard, a lake up north, a trip to Alaska. Not somewhere near the pole: your own sky.

It reads the solar wind, the auroral oval, cloud cover, darkness and the moon, and turns them into one score from 0 to 100 with one plain sentence: when to look, which way to face and what could get in the way. When it isn't worth going out, it says so.

TONIGHT
Your score, its level from quiet to exceptional, and the best hour to step outside. Follow the night hour by hour, with Kp, clouds and the moon at a glance.

YOUR HORIZON COUNTS
Aurora often glows low on the horizon long before it's overhead. Solwind works along your line of sight, so a strong display far to the north still shows up in your score.

LIVE MAP AND GLOBE
The aurora oval as it is right now, with cloud cover on top, the line where it shows on the horizon, and sightings from people nearby. Find clear sky within reach. Spin the 3D globe to see the oval over the night side of the Earth.

SPACE WEATHER
Kp now and for the next three days, solar wind speed, Bz and density, and storm watches as soon as they're issued.

REPORT A SIGHTING
Out under the aurora? One tap tells people near you, often before the forecast catches up. No account, no name. Photo tips help your iPhone catch what your eyes can't.
