How it goes
It starts with eight questions — your people, your days, how you like to be spoken to. Tend writes from what you told it.
After that, each day: how you feel, what's bringing you gratitude, what it is about, why it mattered, and how it feels now. You tap your answers.
Then the pause. Tend writes your gratitude as one sentence, and you watch it become an affirmation — the same moment, said as something you can carry. There is nothing to tap and nothing to skip to. The few seconds you hold it are the practice. Keep the affirmation and it becomes your intention for the day.
About two minutes.
Then it comes back
A gratitude you noticed is saved as a memory. The next morning it returns as a reflection — a short sentence about what yesterday showed. Not a copy of what you wrote: what your own words imply, said back to you. That reflection is where the next noticing starts, and it is why Tend gets more particular the longer you use it. There is more of you to write from.
Everything you notice stays, and you can go back to any of it — the memories you marked, or all of them.
Other ways in
Noticing is the practice. Line, Themes and Shift are other ways in, for the days between.
Today's line — three gratitudes drawn from your own history, already written. Keep the one that is true, or let all three go.
Shift — you say where you are and where you would rather be. Tend finds the moments in your own history that lead from one to the other, and gives them back as a path.
Themes — what keeps returning across your memories, gathered into one place.
Line is there from your first memory. Shift arrives at five memories, Themes at ten.
Where your words go
It knows what matters to you, and there's no account for that to be attached to. What you write is stored on your phone; writing it back takes a model, and nothing is kept on the way.
The writing is done by a language model, which does not run on a phone. So when Tend writes a gratitude, a theme, a shift or a reflection, it sends what that one needs — including your own words and the first names of the people you told it about. Your words are never sold, never used for advertising, and never used to train a model.
Backed by science
Gratitude journaling is one of the most researched interventions in positive psychology. It has been shown to make people up to 25% happier (Emmons & McCullough, 2003; Emmons, 2007), and self-affirmation activates the brain's self-processing and valuation circuits (Cascio et al., 2016). That research is about the practice, not about this app.
Tend is not therapy, not medical care, and not advice. If you are struggling, please talk to someone qualified.
What it costs
Your first gratitude is free — the whole thing, the pause included, so you see what you are buying before you decide.
After that it is Tend Plus, monthly or yearly — your store shows the price in your currency. The first 7 days are free. Payment is charged to your Apple ID at the end of the free trial, and the subscription renews at the same price unless you cancel at least 24 hours before the period ends. Cancel any time in your Apple ID settings.
Everything you have already written stays readable, subscription or not.
