There is a task, right now, that you want to complete, but you can't get yourself to start. Maybe there's more than one.

The tasks may vary, but the feeling is familiar. You set aside the time but nothing gets done. The promise of action turns into the distraction of busy work, doom scrolling, or one more video game. At the end of the day you feel like you've lost a little bit of trust in yourself and your ability to follow through.

Your gatekeeper isn't broken. It is doing its job, just on data you'd rather it ignored.

You can't reason with a blocked gatekeeper, but you can give it new evidence in the only language it understands. The researcher Luca Dellanna calls this the expected emotional outcome.

• Strategy 2: Stop arguing with the resistance. Acknowledge it, then act in service of who you want to be.
• Strategy 3: Take the next step small enough that the gatekeeper can't find anything to refuse.
• Strategy 4: Commit to a duration, not an outcome.
