Dass italienische Weine heute weltweit einen exzellenten Ruf geniessen, hat viel mit der Entwicklung der Toskana zu tun: Schritt für Schritt näherte sich die Region in den vergangenen Jahren dem heutigen Spitzenniveau an. Lange vorbei sind die Zeiten, als Chianti in der Bastfl asche das Nonplusultra war. Erste schimmernde Sterne einer neuen Qualität tauchten bereits vor fast 50 Jahren auf: 1967 der erste Brunello di Montalcino DOCG, 1968 der Sassicaia an der Küste, in den 70er Jahren folgten Tignanello und andere Supertuscans. Aber erst die 80er Jahre brachten den grossen Umbruch in der Toskana; die Idee einer neuen Qualität im Weinbau wurde auch infolge des Methanol-Skandals geboren. Heute gilt die Toskana neben dem Piemont als die Speerspitze der italienischen Qualitätsweinproduktion.
Von der Küste bis an die Hänge des Apennin findet man Rebberge, die
vor allem eines hervorbringen: einen unwahrscheinlich grossen Reichtum an Stilistiken, Terroirs und vor allem guten Weinen.
