You get two estimates side by side, because the two standard models answer the question differently. Naismith's rule allows 5 km/h on the flat and adds one hour for every 600 m of ascent, and it leaves descent out. Tobler's hiking function works from slope instead, setting your walking speed from the total climb and drop spread across the distance, so descent counts toward the figure instead of being ignored. On level ground the two land together, 3:00 against 2:59 for a flat 15 km. On a hilly route they can land well apart: 10 km with 1500 m up and 1500 m down reads 4:30 by Naismith and 5:40 by Tobler, which is exactly where a second estimate helps.
WHAT YOU CAN DO
- Enter distance, total ascent and total descent for any route
- Read the Naismith time and the Tobler time together, in hours and minutes
- Scale both estimates with a fitness factor: Casual, Standard, Fit or Very fit
- Work in metric (km, m) or imperial (mi, ft), set with one tap before you type
- See the average speed the Naismith estimate works out to, in km/h
- Watch every figure update as you type, with no button to press
- Feed descent into the Tobler slope, which Naismith's rule leaves out by design
- Start from a worked example, 15 km with 600 m up and 600 m down, already filled in
- Open the About screen for a plain explanation of both models
WHO IT IS FOR
Day hikers checking whether the summit still fits before dark. Walkers planning a route off a guidebook, a map or a track profile. Trip leaders who need a realistic time for the whole group instead of for themselves.
PRIVACY
TrailPace makes no network requests of any kind. Nothing you enter leaves your device, there is no account to create, and there is no tracking, no analytics and no advertising.
TrailPace gives you a planning estimate, not a guarantee. Terrain, weather, pack weight, rest stops and trail conditions all change the real time on the ground. Use the number as a starting point and keep your own judgement on the hill.
