NEW: THE PAIDEIA
Learn the game from history. Each lesson seats you at a real moment, from Lagash against Umma to Caesar at Alesia, on the ground it was fought on. The history speaks as you play; then the Verdict sets what you did beside what happened, says what the lesson leaves out, and names its books.
THE EARLY BRONZE AGE
Sumer, Akkad and the first empire, from the Nile to the Indus. No horse is ridden: the kunga draws the battle car, the line is the shield wall, sappers breach the walls. There is no coin; copper comes up the Gulf from Dilmun and Magan.
WAR AND TRADE AS THEY WERE
Battles follow a model fitted to real battles. Two lines lose men slowly; the killing comes when one breaks and is pursued, and a staff officer tells you every battle, phase by phase. Every city prices each good by its own shelf, and its townsfolk eat first. Every rule names its sources.
TWO WAYS TO RULE
Rule as Autokrator and you name what the realm is to achieve: take this city, hold that one, break a rival. Your court gives every order and answers you each turn, on the page or aloud, and you may rule it by your voice. Or rule as Epistates and give every order with your own hand.
OR SELL YOUR SWORD
Captain a free company. Hire out to a realm for a term, fight its wars and draw its wage; serve it well and it may make you its satrap, or take a city and found a realm of your own. Courts pay for errands too: run grain through a siege, bring word, hunt raiders. Or play as a Trader with a counting-house and no land, or as a Satrap governing a province for a crown you do not rule.
COMMAND AT A DISTANCE
A march order to a frontier host rides out by courier and takes effect when it arrives. Until then that army does what you last told it. News comes back the same way, and a distant host silent too long may already be gone.
SIX AGES OF WAR
The Early Bronze Age of Sumer and Akkad. The Late Bronze Age, with its palaces, chariots and trading posts. The Archaic Era, from the Assyrian Empire to the rise of Persia. The Classical world, from the Hellenic city-states to the tribes of the north. The Late Roman Republic, from Marius to Actium. And the Dark Ages: peoples of men beside elves, dwarves, gnomes and orc hosts.
A WORLD THAT TRADES
Three desks keep the realm in hand: Court, Couriers and Ledger. Trade at your depots, from a caravan on the road, or down a far route to a distant market. Ask Pheme where a good is sold. Levy a year's tax at once if you dare; droughts and plagues do not ask.
RIVALS WHO REMEMBER
Seat xenoi at your table: rival rulers with a face, a name, a temperament and a voice of their own. Each plays as one of the trained generals, and you may put Apple Intelligence or a language model on your own key in front of it; no key is ever needed. They see only what their scouts report, and they remember you from one war to the next.
YOUR LYCEUM
Open your wars to an AI chat app. It learns the rules from the Strategika, reads your war from your own seat, suggests your next move, and lets you talk with your xenoi.
THE CHRONICLE OF YOUR REIGN
A chronicler writes your reign as you play: an order of battle for every engagement, a gazetteer of the peoples you met, a replay of every season's marches. Bind it as a book.
