Sadly this doesn't work anymore for all devices. Some hardware manufacturers have cut off GPS access when the phone sleeps, and there doesn't seem to be any way around this. Other similar apps have the same issues if you try them out.
Recent changes: 2015 update, fixed some network errors when getting altitude and improved accuracy.

★★★★★
I used this to track a hike and it worked very well. Elevations, distance, speed. Very cool app.
★★★★★
Works well, simple enuff. Would appreciate GUI improvements and ability to visually group treks.

Distance Problem Since the last upgrade I have had a problem with application correctly calculating the distance of my hike. It seems to be off by about a factor of 4. I know a hike that I have taken before that is about 4 miles not shows up as a 16 mile hike. Did not have this problem with the previous version.
★★☆☆☆
Inaccurate After a walk of less than a mile,it indicates I went 5.23 miles. Uninstalling.
★★☆☆☆
Uninstalling, force closes every time, didnt like other gps apps, moto droid w/ froyo
★★☆☆☆
I had to uninstall. When active I couldn't receive phone calls and I had to keep 'force close' whenever I wanted to view 'journey progress'.
★★☆☆☆
Not accurate Six miles in 30 minutes walking. Not accurate. Version for first DROID was great.
★★☆☆☆
Great idea, but keeps force closing on Droid (2.0.1) when I hit Stop Tracking. Then when I reopen and view, it captured only a small part of trip :(
