Nice 1x1 battery widget. It doesn't drain battery as it stops working when phone's screen is off (proven to work optimally on Android 2.2 or higher). Combine it with Quick Settings for getting quick access to system settings or with another app of your choice.
NOTE! Quick Battery is a WIDGET for home screen. You need to add it to your home screen as following.
Option 1: Do long tap on an empty space of home screen. In a popping up menu select "Widgets" option, find a widget called "Quick Battery", press "Done" and widget appears on your home screen.
I use this small app's widget to put a more accurate battery meter on my home screen. The default one in the notification bar overestimates the power left. With this, I know much more exactly how much power I have, and can tap the widget to access other features.
I've probably installed 10 'highly' rated battery apps but still keep coming back to this one. Not the prettiest but best functionality and you don't have to squint to see your percentage.
