TextSecure Private Messenger

TextSecure Private Messenger

TextSecure is a messaging app that allows you to take back your privacy while easily communicating with friends.

Using TextSecure, you can communicate instantly while avoiding SMS fees, create groups so that you can chat in real time with all your friends at once, and share media or attachments all with complete privacy. The server never has access to any of your communication and never stores any of your data.

★ Private. TextSecure uses an advanced end to end encryption protocol that provides privacy for every message every time.

★ Open Source. TextSecure is Free and Open Source, enabling anyone to verify its security by auditing the code. TextSecure is the only private messenger that uses open source peer-reviewed cryptographic protocols to keep your messages safe.

★ Group Chat. TextSecure allows you to create encrypted groups so you can have private conversations with all your friends at once. Not only are the messages encrypted, but the TextSecure server never has access to any group metadata such as the membership list, group title, or group icon.

★ Fast. The TextSecure protocol is designed to operate in the most constrained environment possible. Using TextSecure, messages are instantly delivered to friends.

TextSecure is not currently compatible with tablets, but support for larger screens is on our roadmap and will be included in a future release!

User reviews of TextSecure Private Messenger
Using TextSecure Beta broke my visual voice mail. When a text message arrives to kick off visual voice mail the TextSecure application treats it as text and doesn't launch my visual voice mail application on Android. Once that is addressed I would change my rating to "I like this app!".

This is a great tool, useful, and with a simple and effective interface, giving secure communication. I am not however happy with the human security model chosen. You have to input the passphrase every time you turn off and on the phone. Good passphrases are hard to type, twice so on a smarthphone keyboard. The benefit, secure storing of mostly ephemeral text messages, is doubtful. The people who really need it can be tortured to reveal their passphrase. That's another reason not to use this model. A much better security model would create random passphrases and delete the passphrase AND the messages encrypted with it at the end of the session. The application could offer to re-encrypt the one in a hundred message you'd prefer to keep for posterity with your PGP key. Then, you will only have to input the passphrase in the rare case when you need to view an archived message.

Awesome but slightly lacking Love this app but one feature I'd love to see is the ability to mute specific conversations so I won't receive constant notifications if I'm in something like a large group chat and don't want to actually leave the group chat.

Great app, but has a few things that could be better Love the app, but I've been told by people with Lollipop that the encryption differences cause unreadable texts when the other person uses the native encryption. Also, it could use a better text management interface. If I want to delete a failed text, there is no way to do it. The native JB text manager is much better. If this app could incorporate more of the native managers functionality, it would get 5 stars from me.
