Description

Chess, cut down to twelve squares.

12 Chess is a three-minute duel on a 3x4 board. Every piece is in range from the first move, so there is no opening theory to memorise and no dead middlegame — just a fight from move one.

THE RULE THAT CHANGES EVERYTHING
Capture a piece and it becomes yours. Drop it back onto any empty square and it fights for you. Nothing ever leaves the board, so a piece you lose is a weapon you just handed your opponent.

HOW YOU WIN
Take the enemy king, or walk your own king into their back rank and survive a turn. Push a pawn to the far side and it promotes.

WAYS TO PLAY
- Ranked online matches against real players, on a live global ladder
- Private rooms: share a code and play a friend
- Three AI levels, offline, and you pick your seat — move first, move second, or let it be drawn

A note on what this is: not standard chess. It is a small perfect-information variant with drops, closer to shogi than to an eight-by-eight game. That is exactly why a match takes three minutes and still hurts to lose.

- Chess players who want a full game between two subway stops
- Shogi and minichess fans who like captured pieces coming back into play
- Anyone who bounced off eight-by-eight chess because opening theory felt like homework

WHAT ONLY HAPPENS ON A SMALL BOARD
Trading is never free here. Every capture arms the other side, so the question is never "can I take it" but "what will it do when it comes back". A single drop can create two threats at once, because on twelve squares almost everything is already touching. Attacking and defending are usually the same move, and the losing side is one drop away from turning the board around.

That is why a three-minute strategy game still rewards reading ahead: short does not mean shallow. Play a few rounds against the AI to learn the shapes, then take it online and watch the ladder decide whether you actually understood them.

Recent changes:
Fixed a "win" that arrived the moment a match was found. An opponent who leaves before sitting down no longer counts as a game — you go straight back to the queue.

Fixed friend rematches never connecting after a game.

The matching screen now lists every way a game ends: capture the king, reach the far row with your king and survive a turn, or outlast the opponent's clock. The same position three times is a draw.
