I decompiled this app as it looked very like the one from Vessel finder, and yes, the so-called 'developer' has just ripped-off the Vessel finder app, re-skinned it, included his own rubbish ship icons, and hoped to get some ad revenue on the back of other peoples work. Ignore this app and try the Vessel finder one.

Just downloaded and looked at NYC harbor and no AIS contacts showed in the area or anywhere else. I browsed the comments and one guy said the app is no longer supported. Somehow, I can't give it zero stars, but that seems to be its current value.
