You can't go to China without this app, but it has bugs. When you launch mini programs they can behave erratically. Major annoyance is you cannot type a message to a Didi driver because it randomly adds characters to the message just as if there is no character denounce. Same thing in restaurant apps when trying to search. Because this behavior is identical in different mini apps, Alipay is doing something to data entry.

I am an international traveler visiting China, on the international version of the app, yet it tells me to verify my identity using a mainland chinese bank account

An app which only work with China bank card can't be an international platform. Alipay you have been around for quiet long you should know that it's not only Chinese who use Alipay.

Worst app I've ever used. I uploaded my passport and when I tried putting my bank account no., I got restricted because "your account has terminated a suspicious operation" when I just registered. And now I have to take video verification, take picture of the passport again, and the card details. I don't have a physical card, and I can't screenshot my card details. This is stupidly complicated
