What if you could live your life over again?
In this text-based interactive fiction, you choose what happens next. It's in the style of pick-a-path gamebooks, but with over a thousand multiple-choice questions, it's much longer and deeper than traditional gamebooks. Alter Ego starts at birth and ends at death, including two substantially different versions, depending on whether you choose to be male or female.
Will you grow up to be confident and happy? Will you fight with bullies, or befriend them? Will you find a date to the senior prom? Will you marry and have kids, or start your own business and become a millionaire? The choice is yours.

(Alter Ego was originally published in 1986 for the Commodore 64, MS-DOS, Apple II, and Macintosh. The current edition of the Alter Ego game is a production of Choose Multiple LLC. This edition includes an updated interface and fixes bugs in the original version of the game, but the content of the game hasn't changed from the original 1986 version of the game.)

This game is absolutely precious. My only criticism is the fact that you can't name your character, and I was really hoping to make my character LGBT. However, I would recommend this game. It had a very interesting mechanic, and it keeps me invested. Good job.

This game is a classic and always fun, but I'd like for there to be a second alter ego that's more... Diverse? Maybe with same-sex relationship options in the life choices too?

The game is rather linear, and while one can argue life is just linear events, there isn't much variation to this game. You can't even choose your sexuality. Just plain ol' heterosexual. Not a game really worth purchasing as there isn't much choice in it. The game also kind of lectures you for trying to go off "script". Really? I can't live my life how I want in a "life simulator"? Just download Bit life instead. You'll actually have a bit of fun, and it is free with some variation to each life.

It's really disappointing that you are forced to be straight, and there are options whatsoever about exploring sexuality or gender. This normally wouldn't bother me, except in the childhood and adolescent stages, romance is extremely pushed on you, and the text will constantly describe how "stunning" and "attractive" members of the opposite sex are. Really feels like the heterosexuality is shoved down your throat.

There's nothing to do, and many other apps that do this concept better. Once you play it one time through (about 20 minutes of gameplay) there is not really any more content. Not worth the price, or even half the price. The graphics are also nonexistent for a game of this price - it's a text scroll game with the same text for everything. It also spends a good portion of that text lecturing you, and will punish you harshly for going off-script. Boring, no experimentation allowed. Skip this one.
