WHAT ONE PHOTO GIVES YOU
- The common name, and the Latin scientific name under it
- The conservation status of the species, from Least Concern to Critically Endangered
- Its class: mammal, bird, reptile, amphibian, fish, insect, arachnid or mollusk
- Habitat, native range, diet, adult size and lifespan, metric and imperial
- Whether it is active by day, at night or at dusk
- A confidence level, so you can see how sure the match is
- The probable breed, when the photo is of a dog or a cat
LEAST CONCERN, OR CRITICALLY ENDANGERED?
That category leads every result, because it is the one thing the name alone does not tell you. It describes the species across its whole range on a published scale: Least Concern, Near Threatened, Vulnerable, Endangered, Critically Endangered. Domestic animals come back as Domesticated, and an unassessed species as Not Evaluated rather than a made-up number. It is a category rather than a rarity score, and it belongs to the species, not to the individual animal in your photo.
WILDLIFE AND PETS, IN THE SAME APP
Point the camera at an animal, or pick a photo you already took. Mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, fish, insects, spiders and snails all work: a deer in a field, a lizard on a wall, frogs in the pond, a butterfly on a flower, a beetle on the kitchen floor. Point it at a dog or a cat and the result names the probable breed alongside the species, the fastest read on an adopted animal of unknown mix.
BUILT FOR THE PHOTOS YOU ACTUALLY TAKE
Half in shadow, half behind a branch, shot from across a field. When an image will not support a species-level answer, this animal identifier stops at the genus or the family and says so instead of inventing a species. That happens often with insects and spiders, and it is the honest answer.
WHY IT IS LISTED THAT WAY
Every result names the pressures on the species: habitat loss, poaching, climate change, invasive species and pollution. It lists natural predators too, or None (apex) for the animals nothing hunts.
ASK ABOUT WHAT YOU FOUND
Every scan can open a chat thread about the animal you just identified. Ask how to tell it apart from a lookalike, how far its range extends, what it eats, why its numbers are falling. It stays on animals.
YOUR COLLECTION, KEPT
Every scan is saved on your device with its photo, so a summer of walks becomes a record of what you have seen. No account needed.
WHO IT IS FOR
- Anyone who saw something in the garden or on a trail and wants a name
- Parents and teachers at the zoo, the aquarium or on a nature walk
- Owners of an adopted dog or cat who want a read on the mix
- Birders, herpers and wildlife photographers after a fast second opinion
HONEST ABOUT WHAT A PHOTO CAN DO
An identification here is a best-effort AI suggestion, not an authoritative determination, and a breed read on a mixed dog is an estimate, not a DNA result. Conservation status is a species-level category and not a legal one: it does not tell you what is protected where you live, and nothing here is guidance on approaching, handling, keeping or moving an animal. There is no veterinary or medical advice here, and the chat will not answer questions about illness or injury. For an animal in trouble, contact a vet or your local wildlife authority.
Identification needs an internet connection. Scans you have already saved stay on your device and can be reopened at any time.
PREMIUM
Free includes 2 identifications per day. Premium removes the daily limit and opens the Ask AI thread on every result. Subscriptions renew automatically unless cancelled at least 24 hours before the current period ends, and you can manage or cancel yours in your Google Play account settings at any time.
