Point the camera at one item, whole or cut, and this vegetable identifier gives you its name, its other names, and a keep-time.
WHAT ONE PHOTO GIVES YOU
• The keep-time, with the condition it depends on, such as 5 - 7 days refrigerated
• The name a shopper or a market would use, plus the other names it is sold under
• The category, from root vegetable to leafy green to winter squash
• The Latin name, the season, and how ripe the pictured item looks
• Where to store it, for how long, and how it is prepped and cooked
• What it is confused with, and the test that tells them apart
• The cues in your photo that led to the call, and any handling hazard
THE KEEP-TIME LEADS THE RESULT
Naming it is the easy half. The real question at home is whether it goes in the fridge tonight or sits in a cupboard for two months. So the keep-time sits directly under the name, with its condition: refrigerated, cool and dark, on the counter, in water. The storage method that makes it true sits just below.
IT NAMES THE LOOK-ALIKE AND THE TEST
Zucchini against cucumber. Turnip against rutabaga. Sweet potato against yam against taro. Shishito against jalapeno, where the wrong call changes the pepper's heat. Apple, pear, citrus and potato varieties, which a photo usually cannot settle. In each family it names the most likely item, names the rival beside it, and tells you what would settle it: cut it open, add something for scale, crush a leaf and smell it, read the label. Where an ornamental or wild plant could be in frame, it says so first and sends you to the seller.
A DIFFERENT NAME IN EVERY AISLE
Zucchini and courgette. Eggplant and aubergine. Rutabaga and swede. Every result lists the other names the item is sold under, which is the whole problem in an unfamiliar market.
WHAT IT COVERS
Root vegetables and tubers, leafy greens, culinary herbs, brassicas, alliums, winter and summer squash and gourds, chilli and sweet peppers, legumes in the pod, citrus and stone fruit, and whatever else a farmers market, a veg box or a garden harvest hands over.
ASK ABOUT WHAT YOU JUST SCANNED
Every result opens into Ask AI, a conversation kept to produce and the kitchen: telling look-alikes apart, choosing well at the stand, storing something already cut, reviving limp greens, finding a substitute.
YOUR SCANS, KEPT
Every scan is saved on your device with its photo, so a weekly shop or a whole harvest is worked through one item at a time. It opens again at any time, no account.
WHO IT IS FOR
• CSA, veg box and farm-stand subscribers, holding what nobody chose for them
• Cooks in an unfamiliar market, facing an aisle whose names they do not know
• Anyone wasting less of what they carried home from the market
• Gardeners and allotment holders sorting a harvest into keep and use-now
HONEST ABOUT WHAT A PHOTO CAN DO
This app is an AI reading of the photo you take. It names the most likely item and gives a general keep-time for storing it well. It does not confirm that anything is safe to eat. Varieties of apples, potatoes, citrus and peppers cannot always be told apart from a photo, and some ornamental and wild plants closely resemble edible produce, so when the photo does not settle it the app names what it could be confused with and what to check. Confirm anything unfamiliar with the seller, or with someone who knows the item, before eating it, and use your own judgement and local food-safety guidance on whether something has kept. Keep-times are a guide for a well-stored item, not an expiry date.
Identifying an item needs an internet connection. Results you have already saved stay on your device and open again at any time.
The interface and the results are available in 33 languages.
