Let's start with a question: what do you think is the most common and perhaps most important question asked during an interview for an echo ultrasound technologist (cardiac sonographer) job? In my opinion, it has to be "do you know how to calculate aortic stenosis". Fact: over 25% of patients over the age of 65 suffer from some type of aortic valve disease with the most common diagnosis being that of aortic valve stenosis.* Aortic stenosis is one of the primary reasons a TTE or echo exam is ordered.
I work in a major hospital and have been the scanning test dummy for many potential echo job applicants for a position in our lab. Invariably almost all the applicants were asked the same question by the interviewer, "show me how you calculate the aortic valve area." In my opinion, if an interviewee can strongly demonstrate this skill that person has a huge advantage over the other applicants that are weak in this area (that is just logical as there are normally so many aortic stenosis cases). If you are applying for a cardiac sonographer position, someone that just needs to refresh his skills, or an echo student, then this app was designed with you in mind by a currently practicing cardiac sonographer. Simple and short, right to the point with many illustrative videos pointing out exactly where to measure (e.g. LVOT diameter) and how to measure as per the published ASE/ICAEL guidelines.
Assessing the severity of aortic stenosis is one of the key skills a cardiac sonographer must have as it is employed often within a hospital, clinic, or private office setting.
