Astronight: Stargazing Weather

Astronight tells you whether tonight is worth setting up the telescope or the camera — and exactly when. A stargazing weather forecast built for astronomers and astrophotographers, anywhere in the world.

Instead of reading rows of colored boxes, you get one answer: a score for tonight, the best hours to observe, how much the weather models agree, and what is holding the night back — the Moon, a layer of high cloud, dew on your optics.

◆ TONIGHT, AT A GLANCE
- A score for every hour of the night and the best continuous window
- Scoring modes for deep sky, planets and the Milky Way
- Plain-language reasons, plus heads-ups for rain and dew
- Confidence from comparing independent weather models, not a single guess

◆ THE DETAIL OBSERVERS ASK FOR
- Hour-by-hour clouds by layer — low, mid and high
- Seeing and transparency where the Canadian astronomy models cover (North America)
- Wind, temperature, dew point, humidity, smoke haze and the Kp index
- A Sun and Moon chart with twilight, moonrise, moonset and illumination
- A cloud outlook for the days ahead

◆ ANYWHERE ON EARTH
Forecasts work worldwide — Europe, Africa, Asia, Australia, South America — not only North America. Search any place or use your location.

◆ MAPS
Cloud cover and cloud layers, seeing and transparency, smoke, ground conditions, the jet stream, a light pollution map (estimated Bortle class) for finding dark sky and live satellite imagery — infrared, visible and water vapour — with a timeline you can play.

◆ COMMUNITY SKY PHOTOS
- A feed of night-sky photos from other stargazers, and their pins on the map
- Every photo shows the sky it was taken under: light pollution (Bortle), the Moon and darkness
- Post your own shots and see them on your profile; tap a name to see someone's photos
- Get the forecast for any photo's spot in one tap
- Report or block anything that doesn't belong. Posting needs a free sign-in with Apple or Google; the spot is rounded to about 1 km or 10 km and photo metadata is removed on your phone

◆ THE SKY TONIGHT
- Moon phase, age, distance and the next phases
- Planets above the horizon during the dark hours and a 24-hour sky clock
- ISS passes with direction and height — a satellite tracker for the night ahead
- Eclipses, meteor showers, oppositions and conjunctions, with optional notifications
- Aurora outlook from the Kp index and the auroral oval
- A planetarium with stars, constellations, planets and the Moon at any time, plus a 3D view of the Solar System
- My List: your own deep-sky targets and when they are up tonight

◆ BUILT FOR THE FIELD
- Red night-vision mode that keeps your dark adaptation
- Site Mode: coordinates, altitude and sidereal time on a red screen
- Sources and model run times on every forecast
