Bestiarium: Mythical Creatures

A dragon can bring rain, guard a hoard or stand for a nation. Bestiarium follows these differences through a compact library of mythical creatures and the books that describe them.

EXPLORE THE CODEX
Read 60 creature entries, from Long, Naga and Hydra to Kammapa, Curupira, Amaru, Uktena, Nanaue and Bunyip. Search names, aliases, regions, motifs and authors, or browse eight creature families, including forest folk and giants.

FOLLOW THE STORIES ON A MAP
Explore 28 regions through an atlas and a labelled region list. Choose Africa, South America, North America, Oceania, Asia and Mediterranean, or Europe and Atlantic. Follow stories from the Brazilian Amazon, Guianas, Peruvian Andes, Lower Congo, Cross River, Nile, Aotearoa and beyond.

COMPARE ACROSS CULTURES
Place any two entries side by side. Compare their forms, narrative roles, settings, traditions and sources. Discover why a shared name or shape can hide a different story.

READ WITH THE SOURCES
Original summaries sit beside short, attributed excerpts from 14 historical editions, including Myths and Legends of the Bantu, Myths of the Cherokee, Hawaiian Folk Tales and accounts from the Guianas and Peru. Each source has its own author, date and historical context. Similar creatures retain their distinct traditions.

KEEP YOUR OWN COLLECTION
Save favourite creatures and mark entries as read. Adjust reading text size, jump to the top or bottom of long entries and share a creature excerpt as an image with its source and app link.

A home-screen widget introduces another creature from the codex. The bundled codex, atlas and comparison work offline. Source-edition links and store services use a connection.

All creature entries and features are included. The app contains ads; the optional one-time remove_ads purchase removes advertising.
