Why read the Bhagavad Gita in English
For many readers, an English translation of the Gita is the clearest way to understand the teachings of Krishna. Each shloka is presented with its English translation, so you can read the Bhagavad Gita in English verse by verse, at your own pace, whether you are new to the scripture or returning to it.
Shrimad Bhagavad Gita (श्रीमद्भगवद्गीता)
The Song by God, often referred to as the Gita, is a 700-verse Hindu scripture that is part of the epic Mahabharata (chapters 23 to 40 of book 6 of the Mahabharata, called the Bhishma Parva). It is dated to the second half of the first millennium BCE, is typical of the Hindu synthesis, and is considered one of the holy scriptures of Hinduism.
The Bhagwat Geeta is set in a narrative framework of a dialogue between the Pandava prince Arjuna and his guide and charioteer Krishna, the Supreme Personality of Godhead. At the start of the Dharma Yuddha (righteous war) between the Pandavas and the Kauravas, Arjuna is filled with moral dilemma and despair about the violence and death the war will cause in the battle against his own kind. He wonders if he should renounce, and seeks the counsel of Krishna, whose answers and discourse constitute the Bhagavad Gita. Krishna counsels Arjuna to fulfil his Kshatriya (warrior) duty to uphold the Dharma through selfless action. The Krishna and Arjuna dialogues cover a broad range of spiritual topics, touching upon ethical dilemmas and philosophical issues that go far beyond the war Arjuna faces.
