Dig Order

Dig Order is a practice tool for learning the correct sequence of removing archaeological deposits. It presents a trench section where you must tap each context in the right order based on stratigraphic principles. The app focuses on the core skill of understanding how cuts, layers, and structures relate to one another before you dig them.

The interface places deposits and cuts out in the drawing, starting with the most recent. Each tap removes the selected element from the visual representation. This hands-on interaction mirrors the physical process of excavation. You work from the top down, dealing with superjacent deposits before reaching those below.

When you make a mistake, the app provides immediate and specific feedback. It explains why the attempt was incorrect using clear language that guides you to the right next step. For example, it might state that a certain layer is sealed by another, meaning you must dig the sealing layer first. This quick correction helps you understand the logic behind the order without frustration.

The package includes eight teaching sections designed on the same scale. These range from a Roman road ditch to a Victorian cesspit, offering varied examples. This variety ensures you can practice with different types of archaeological features. You will encounter various stratigraphic relationships as you move through the levels.

Find spots found within deposits carry their associated dates. This information helps you connect the physical order of excavation with chronological time. You can see how the sequence reveals how early each layer can be. This dual focus on spatial and temporal ordering deepens your understanding of site formation.

After you finish a section, you can review the Harris matrix that matches your excavation order. The app lists any wrong taps you made at the bottom of this summary. This allows you to see exactly where your reasoning went off track. With Dig Order, your progress and practice results are stored on your device and work completely offline with no account needed.
