Description

Hours is a timesheet for people who are paid by the hour. Clock in when you
start and out when you finish, or type a shift in afterwards from a paper rota
— the app does not mind which.

WHAT MOST HOURS APPS GET WRONG

A shift here is two points on the timeline, not a date and two clock times. It
sounds like a technicality. It is the difference between being paid correctly
and not:

• A shift that crosses midnight is eight hours, not minus sixteen. 22:00 to
06:00 is just a subtraction here — there is no special case, so there is no
special case to get wrong.

• The night the clocks go forward, 22:00 to 06:00 is SEVEN hours. The night
they go back it is nine. Apps that subtract wall-clock times get both wrong,
silently, twice a year, and the person they shortchange is the one working
nights.

• Clock in in one country and out in another and the shift is exactly as long
as it was.

OVERTIME THAT DOES NOT DOUBLE-COUNT

Set a daily threshold, a weekly one, or neither. With both, the weekly one only
counts hours that were not already overtime — otherwise five nine-hour days
come out as ten hours of overtime in a forty-five hour week, which is more
overtime than the week had hours over forty. Ordinary plus overtime always adds
up to the total, on every week.

THE WEEK STARTS WHERE YOU SAY

Monday, Sunday or Saturday. Not a formatting preference: it decides which shifts
land in which week, and so how much weekly overtime a week has.

THE CLOCK YOU FORGOT TO STOP

Everybody forgets sometimes. Past sixteen hours this app stops believing a
running shift, says so, and leaves it out of your totals until you put the real
end time in — instead of quietly reporting a three-day shift and a week with
seventy-four hours in it.

ROUNDING, AND WHAT IT COSTS YOU

Off by default, because this app does not want to round anything. It is here so
your total can be compared with a payslip that does — to the nearest quarter
hour, or down to the last six minutes — and so you can see the difference. The
week says what the rounding did to it, with a sign.

PAY, IN WHOLE PENCE

Give a job an hourly rate and each week shows roughly what it is worth,
overtime at your multiplier. The arithmetic is in whole minor units end to end,
never in decimals that drift, and it rounds down so an estimate never comes in
over the payslip.

WHAT IT WILL NOT DO

No location, ever. Geofenced clock-in is the flagship feature of the paid
rivals here and it is refused: it needs background location and your employer's
address, and it is wrong at the edges in both directions — which for a
timesheet means being paid for the wrong number. Pressing a button takes half a
second.

No account, no sync, no server. Your hours are on your phone and nowhere else.
No notifications either — nothing in this app will ever interrupt you.

Three permissions, all of them for the ads that keep it free.

Recent changes:
The shift editor now shows times the way the rest of the app does.

It printed 22:00 on its buttons while the same shift read 10:00 PM
everywhere else, and its time picker was always 24-hour whatever your
phone is set to. Both follow your phone now.
