Hush — Block Spam Calls

Hush stops unwanted calls — telemarketing, scams, silent calls — with lists that are yours and that you share yourself, with no server in the middle.

Every call from a number that is not in your contacts goes through Hush, which decides on the phone whether it rings, is silenced or is blocked. No number is sent anywhere to be checked: the decision is made right there, in an instant.

What it does

• The log is the first screen: every screened call, with the time, what happened and why. A call blocked by mistake is never a mystery.
• One tap on "Block" next to a call and that number never rings again.
• Rules that work from the first minute: block hidden numbers, block foreign numbers, silence every unknown number.
• Whole prefixes: "+44 20…" and everything that starts that way.
• Several lists, each with its own behaviour: block, silence, or always ring — for the doctor who calls from a hidden number.
• Lists to share: export a list as a file and send it with whatever you already use; whoever receives it imports it, and it becomes a list of its own, kept apart from theirs, that silences rather than blocks to start with.
• Imports a CSV or a text file with one number per line, too.
• Syncable folder: lists can live in a folder that Syncthing, Mega or Drive copy between your devices, or to another person.
• A notification after every block, which you can turn off.
• A shield that lights up when the phone has been busy: the more calls it stopped in the last hours, the warmer it glows.
• In English and Italian, following the phone's language.

Why no public database

Apps like this check every number against their own server, and build an archive of who calls whom. Hush does not: the lists stay on the phone, and if you want to share them, you do — with the people you trust.

What it does not do

• No account and no sign-up.
• It does not read your contacts or the call log: the system leaves contacts out, and only unknown numbers reach Hush.
• It sends no numbers, calls or lists to any server.

Permissions

• "Caller ID & spam" role: what lets the app screen incoming calls. You grant it, and you can take it back any time from the phone's settings.
• Notifications: for the notice after a block. If you say no, the filter works the same.
• Internet: for ads only.
