ABOUT CLAUDE MONET
──────────────────────────────
Claude Monet (1840-1926) spent sixty years painting not the object in front of him but the light falling on it. One of his harbour sketches, Impression Sunrise, handed a hostile critic the word that named the whole movement. From the late 1880s he worked in series, setting several canvases side by side and switching between them as the hour changed, so that a row of haystacks or a cathedral front becomes a record of time passing. In 1883 he settled at Giverny and built the subject he would paint most: a water garden with a Japanese footbridge, planted and dammed until it suited him.
