Migrated from View ranger with complete UK 1:25000 maps of the UK. Did the Cape Wrath Trail this April/May, downloaded routes and maps in Glenfinnan where I had data, but once out into the wilds they all disappeared when I'd toggled from tracking to looking for the next leg of the route. Fortunately, I still had View ranger on the phone and used the gpx files downloaded to the SD card. View ranger worked faultlessly for the next two weeks of the trail. Great since then in the Alps and Norway.

An essential tool in my hiking kit. I use the app to plan, find and follow routes in the UK and other countries. I appreciate being able to quickly plan and find routes on the web interface and download to my Android phones for navigation or tracking where it performs fine. The UI is not always intuitive, but the support team are superfast to respond to emailed help queries. Pro subscription is good value considering it gives me full OS mapping, so I don't need to buy maps anymore.

I first installed the basic one. Shortly after, I paid the pro subscription. I live in rural Scotland. Maps appear slightly better than Papyrus app, so, ok. But since Match 2026, the app started to consistently crash in the middle of my activities. Fortunately I was not relying on it for orientation. I tested things by running simultaneously Papyrus (free version) and Outdoor active, I found the former stable, the latter crashed all the time. Also, urban maps are useless (i.e: Barcelona)

When I started using this it was View ranger, it was a bit clunky, but it did what I wanted and did it well. The UI is still poor, plans/tracks/routes still seems an unintuitive way of working. Where is the import .gpx option now? And then there's the map search... Most of the time (80-90%) I have to find a place on Google Maps then zoom in and find it manually on OA. More often it finds me 10 places with the same name nowhere near my search. A frustrating app with undeveloped potential.
