Welcome to Pocket Maps, the app for safely exploring the outdoors on public access land in Aotearoa, New Zealand.
Pocket Maps is developed and owned by Herenga ā Nuku Aotearoa, the Outdoor Access Commission, and displays a range of maps and layers that are also available on the Herenga ā Nuku mapping system.
Pocket Maps displays Public Access Areas derived by Herenga ā Nuku from cadastral information, which indicate what land is publicly accessible. The app also contains offline topographic maps, tracks, recreation spots, huts and campsite layers which are maintained and owned by other government agencies.

Great for seeing public land boundaries offline in-situ, like paper roads, but some bugs on my old phone. Have to download a region first (not a bug, but this takes two taps – arrow, cloud). Zooming in shortens the ‘loading’ time for me offline. Topo map only available online. Same with in-app screenshots, so I just use my phone’s own feature. Need your phone’s location setting on to show current location (crosshairs) – often have to restart app for it to take effect.

Hi. Great concept! Been using the walking access maps for a long time. Now able to have them offline on cellphone is a great step forward. One niggle..... Seems to be restricted to just one area at a time. How about being able to download and cache all regions in one go for offline use?

Can't get past the advice that it doesn't work on android 15 and above. Very disappointed, great app if it could be fixed

Discovered app via social media, thought I'd give it a try at home. We're in Northland and I couldn't really see anything on the map I cannot already see via NZTopo. Appreciate the layers describe access rights etc. but they were almost all public roads, and I could work this out for myself. Coupled with this, the app is just clunky and not particularly intuitive.

Sorry but this is not good enough. My comparison point is NZtopo and the basic issue is that the downloadable version of the topo map is pretty much unreadable. I have a modern phone (Samsung FE20), runs NZtopo like a dream. The map that is coming up with this application lacks the differentiation of the actual NZ topo to the point where it is useless. Make it like NZtopo
