Das Ensemble aus Sammlung, Palais und Park gilt seit 2009 als national bedeutsam und erfreut sich bei Besuchern aus nah und fern großer Beliebtheit.
Seit seiner Erbauung um 1769 diente das Sommerpalais bis 1918 als Sommerresidenz der Fürsten Reuß älterer Linie. 1922 wurde im Palais ein Museum eröffnet, die Staatliche Bücher- und Kupferstichsammlung Greiz. Zum Bestand gehören die fürstliche Hofbibliothek, die fürstliche graphische Sammlung – darunter auch die Schabkunstsammlung der englischen Prinzessin Elizabeth – sowie das 1975 gegründete SATIRICUM, eine berühmte Karikaturensammlung aus fünf Jahrhunderten. Zahlreiche Gäste besuchen jedes Jahr das Ostthüringer Museum mit seinen Sammlungen.
