Two refurbished servers in your mum's garage. A dream. A very warm garage.

Fill the rack and the money starts ticking. Buy more racks, better servers and a bigger building: a rented unit, a proper data hall, then a hyperscale campus with forty racks. Every server you add makes heat, draws power and pushes traffic, so the building has to keep up.

KEEP IT COOL
Air handlers, chillers and cooling towers, each with its own cost. Towers are cheap but drink water, so mind the tank and the supply line. Let the hall get hot and the servers throttle; let it get hotter and they fail, or catch fire.

ARRANGE EVERY RACK
Pick racks up and put them down. Fronts face fronts across a cold aisle, backs face backs across a hot one, and the air handlers go where the heat is. A heat map shows how far the cold air reaches. Dense hardware needs it close.

POWER, WATER AND FIBRE
Grid connection, solar, batteries and diesel generators; the water tank and supply; the fibre uplink. Each one is a machine in the yard that you can watch work, and each one is a number that can let you down.

THINGS GO WRONG
153 events, from an anime selfie trend that sets every GPU on Earth on fire to an intern who divided by zero. Tap out fires, pump out floods, untangle cables, filter DDoS attacks and evict the raccoon from the cable tray.

CLIENTS, STAFF AND A RIVAL
Sign contracts that pay more but want their compute every second. Hire technicians with traits: Speedy, Night Owl, Lucky, Meticulous, Firefighter, Networker. Keep your uptime high or Nimbus Compute takes your customers.

SEVEN SITES
When the building has earned enough, sell up, keep your shares and start again somewhere new: Reykjavík, the Nevada desert, Singapore, the seabed, low Earth orbit and the Moon. Each site plays differently.
