Description
Whywasteme is a new app that connects recycling to cleaner Seas. Use the app to scan barcodes on plastic bottles or other types of single use packaging and then recycle them in one of the recycling spots shown in the app’s map. In this way, you collect points that your can donate to organisations that focus on cleaning Greek seas and coasts. The app also calculates the amount of carbon dioxide emissions that you save with every package recycled.
HOW DOES THE APP WORK?
It's simple! After you've consumed your drink, you scan the barcode on empty PET bottles or aluminium cans through the "scan" button in our navigation bar. Then you find the closest recycling spot (collector) using the "map" button, you take the empty packages there and you click on the recycle here button! Bingo!
Currently, you can use the Whywasteme app to recycle packaging in Vouliagmeni& Varkiza and Tinos (Cyclades) but our network of recycling spots is expected to grow fast.
ABOUT US
Whywasteme is an app by the Whywasteme non profit based in Athens, Greece. We are driven by an ambitious mission: to develop new solutions so that no packaging ends up as waste on islands and seaside locations. Our vision is a Mediterranean where all single use packaging is recycled separately.
WHAT IS THE CHALLENGE THAT THIS APP ADDRESSES?
Summer causes a notable increase in single-use packaging waste and especially water and drinks packaging. In areas with seasonal tourism the problem is much greater: Millions of disposable packages accumulate during the warm months on the Greek islands and coastal areas without being recycled. This phenomenon affects both ecosystems and the very value of a place as experienced by visitors and residents. During the high season, plastic pollution in the Mediterranean region increases by 40%.
