Auralis: Light Meditation

Quiet a busy mind in ten minutes. No sitting still, no trying to clear your head.

Auralis pulses light and sound at the rhythms your brain settles into when you are relaxed, meditating, or drifting off to sleep. You lie down, close your eyes, and let it do the work. Within a few minutes most people begin to see moving color and geometric patterns behind their eyelids.

WHAT IT HELPS WITH

• Let go of the day. Ten minutes is usually enough to feel the difference.
• Fall asleep more easily. The Sleep session walks you down from alert to drowsy, then fades out on its own.
• Meditate without the struggle. If sitting practice has never stuck, the light does the settling for you.
• Get out of your own head. Racing thoughts have something to follow instead of each other.
• Come back to focus. A short session clears the fog when your attention is everywhere at once.

HOW IT WORKS

The brain tends to fall in step with a rhythm it can see and hear. Auralis pulses your phone's rear camera flash in time with binaural audio, and moves that rhythm through the bands associated with relaxation (alpha), deep meditation (theta) and sleep (delta).

Nothing happens on the screen. The imagery is your own visual system responding to light through closed eyelids, which is why no two sessions look quite the same.

HOW TO USE IT

Make the room as dark as you can. Put headphones on. Lie down, close your eyes, and rest the phone 5 to 10 cm from your face with the rear flash pointing at you. Then stop trying, and let the session run.

THE SESSIONS

Wander (free). An open, drifting session, and the best place to start.
Sleep (free). Winds down from beta to delta for the end of the day.
Unwind. Ambient alpha with a longer, softer build.
Deep Calm. Slower theta, for when you want to go further down.
Meditate. Theta, for sitting practice.
Focus. A short beta session for when your head is somewhere else.

Every session runs a timed program rather than holding one note. It opens gently, settles, drifts lower, and fades out slowly so you are not dropped out of it at the end. The brightness rises and falls on a slow 12 second cycle as it goes.

GOOD TO KNOW

Headphones are needed. Binaural audio depends on each ear hearing a slightly different tone, so it does not work through a speaker.

The darker the room, the stronger the effect. Ambient light washes it out even through closed eyelids.

Ten to thirty minutes is plenty. Longer is not better, and a short session you finish attentively beats a long one you drift out of.

SAFETY

Auralis flashes bright light at a steady rhythm. Do not use it if you have photosensitive epilepsy, or a personal or family history of seizures. Do not use it after alcohol or other substances, and do not use it while driving or operating machinery. Stop at once if you feel unwell. If you are unsure whether this is suitable for you, speak to a doctor first.

Auralis Premium unlocks every session and everything added in future. It is offered as a monthly or annual auto renewing subscription. Payment is charged to your Apple Account at confirmation of purchase. The subscription renews automatically unless it is canceled at least 24 hours before the end of the current period, and your account is charged for renewal within 24 hours of the end of that period. You can manage or cancel your subscription in your Apple Account settings.
