Browse Poster is not solely a plant identification app. Its primary purpose is to help users find plants that may be suitable for animal feeding and provide researched information on their potential toxicity and use.
The database currently focuses mainly on European species, alongside plants commonly used as browse elsewhere and toxic plants that may present a risk. We will continue to expand the database, with North America currently a priority.
FEATURES
Ask Hazel:
Upload a plant photo from your gallery or take one with your camera and Hazel will use AI to suggest an identification. Hazel checks whether the identified plant is in the Browse Poster database and, where available, links to its plant page and suggests similar-looking species. You can also ask Hazel questions directly about plants, including their suitability for particular animals, without uploading a photo. Feeding and toxicity information is drawn exclusively from Browse Poster’s verified database and research. If verified information is unavailable, Hazel will tell you rather than provide unverified feeding advice.
Tree ID by Feature:
Narrow down a tree or shrub using features including leaves, buds, bark and fruits, combining features where needed.
Wildflower ID by Feature:
A simplified feature key designed to help narrow down wildflower identification.
Plants For My Animal:
Choose an animal group and subgroup, where applicable, to find potentially suitable plants, grouped into Trees & Shrubs, Wildflowers & Herbs, and Reeds & Grasses.
A-Z:
Look up plants by name, grouped into Trees & Shrubs, Wildflowers & Herbs, and Reeds & Grasses.
Search:
Search by common or botanical name, or find species native or naturally occurring by continent.
My Saved Plants:
Save frequently used plant species to your phone or tablet using the green leaf icon on each plant page.
Plant Toxicity Info:
Learn about plant toxicity, how toxic compounds work, how animals mitigate exposure to toxic plants in the wild, and how this knowledge can inform captive management.
Please note that only plants currently covered in the database are available through the app’s search functions and feature keys.
Individual plant pages include a species description, Toxicity & Hazards information and feeding guidelines for different animal groups where applicable. Where available, the Toxicity & Hazards section includes summaries of relevant research and scientific studies.
Feeding guidance uses a traffic-light system:
Green: safe to feed as part of a varied diet
Yellow: feed in moderation
Amber: feed sparingly
Red: avoid if possible or do not feed at all
The feeding guidelines are intended to support, rather than replace, professional judgement. We strongly advise reading the Toxicity & Hazards information alongside the feeding guidelines to help you make an informed decision based on the particular animal and circumstances.
